National Media Conference concludes with release of nine point manifesto



18 Chait, Kathmandu. The National Media Conference concluded with the release of a nine-point manifesto.

General Secretary Roshan Puri has informed that the meeting of the Central Committee of Nepal Journalist Federation held on March 16-17 and the National Media Conference unanimously passed the proposal to make the membership cleaning campaign more effective and issued a 9-point manifesto.

The summons has asked those who have not been active in journalism for a long time and those who are engaged in other professions, to give up the membership of the Journalists Association.

The conference also drew the attention of the government to the formation and perfection of the bodies related to communication which should be constituted as per the constitution.

Nepal Journalist Federation’s ‘National Media Conference’ Lumbini, Manifesto – 2079

The eighth meeting of the Central Committee of the Union of Nepali Journalists was held at Ramgram in Nawalparasi and ‘National Media Conference’ at Lumbini in Rupandehi. The meeting of the Central Committee held on 16-17 Chait 2079 and the National Media Conference unanimously approves the proposal to make the membership purification campaign more effective and issues this manifesto.

  1. This conference resolves to make the membership purification campaign more effective to develop the Federation of Nepali Journalists as a general organization of active journalists. Incorporating the suggestions received, it shows the commitment to finalize the criteria prepared for membership purification and to work according to the proposed program.
  2. This conference urges those who have not been active in journalism for a long time and are engaged in other professions, to give up their membership. This Conference directs all the three Committees to honorably send off the members who have given written notice of resignation and resume work so that the membership of the people’s representatives and full-time employees of the Government automatically ceases to exist.

  3. As per sub-section (8) of section 5 of the constitution, only those members who have been active for 6 months prior to the next convention are allowed to vote in the next election of the federation.

  4. The Conference of Nepal Journalists Federation expresses grave concern and concern that although the Constitution of Nepal 2072 fully guarantees freedom of the press and expression, the three tiers of government formed since then have not enacted communications related laws that were made To fully implement the constitutional right to freedom of press and expression. This conference again calls for the formulation of press friendly laws with guarantees of civil rights, freedom of the press, right to information. Furthermore, it draws the attention of the government to the formation and perfection of the bodies related to communication which should be constituted as per the constitution. It also urges political parties to enforce the constitutional rights of freedom of press and expression and civil liberties.

  5. Working journalists are being denied minimum wages, service facilities and other benefits as per existing laws including the Working Journalists Act. The conference urges the government and concerned media houses for full implementation of the Act, timely increase in minimum wages and full implementation of specified service facilities. It also promises to make trade union practices more effective, including pressure, agitation and legal measures.

  6. Seeking the immediate implementation of a proportionate advertising system for the smooth and reliable operation of the media, the Convention draws the attention of the Government to regulate the advertising of local government bodies and state government advertising given to the local media.   7. Calling upon all journalists to practice responsible and dignified journalism in full compliance with the Journalistic Code of Conduct, this conference declares that the program being organized for training and skill development to enhance professional competence, as a campaign will be run

  8. This convention urges all levels of government and the Lumbini Development Fund to promote, promote, develop and create necessary infrastructure in Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, Ramgram in Nawalparasi where Astudhatu is located, for the full implementation of the master plan for Lumbini development.
