7 October, Kathmandu. Work on the world’s largest railway tunnel, 40 meters under the Baltic Sea, is progressing rapidly in recent times. This tunnel will connect Germany and Denmark and due to this rail tunnel, the travel time between the two countries will be greatly reduced.

The planning of the tunnel took 10 years and its construction started only in 2020. The name of this rail tunnel is Fehmarnbelt Rail Tunnel.

A temporary port on the Danish side of the tunnel has been completed. This port will act like a factory with the help of which 89 big concrete stations will be built. Those stations will be an important part of the tunnel.

18 km long rail tunnel

This tunnel will be about 18 km long. It is the largest infrastructure project in Europe with a budget of over $7 billion 100 million. The work of construction of this tunnel has been entrusted to Femarn AS of Denmark. According to the company’s CEO Henrik Vincentsson, the first production line will be ready by the end of this year or early 2023.

The Channel Tunnel connecting France and England is about 50 kilometers long. Its construction was completed in 1993 and cost $13.6 million.

The Channel Tunnel is longer than the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel but the said tunnel was built with the help of a boring machine. The Fehmarnbelt is the first railway tunnel that passes under the sea and is being built in pieces.

This tunnel will come out from under the Fehmarnbelt. It is the part that connects Fehmorn Island in Germany and Löllland in Denmark. Nowadays people cross it by boat.

The purpose of this tunnel is to cut the journey which currently takes from 45 minutes to just 7 minutes. Every year millions of people travel by boat and ferry between Rodby and Puttgarden.

The official name of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel Fixed Line. This is the first such tunnel in the world where there will be both road and railway. Apart from electric railways, this tunnel will also have service lane with two-lane road for vehicles.

According to the company’s technical director, Jean Ole Kasuland, it currently takes 4 and a half hours to travel by train from Copenhagen to Hamburg. With the construction of this railway tunnel, this distance will be covered in just two and a half hours.

The project was started in 2008

This rail tunnel project was started in 2008. At that time an agreement was signed between Germany and Denmark on this matter. After that, it took a decade for legal proceedings between the two countries to bridge the technical gaps related to the construction of railways. Various organizations in Germany have also opposed it, saying that the tunnel is against environmental regulations.

In November 2020 a German court dismissed all lawsuits filed against the railway tunnel, which led to the project going ahead. With the completion of the construction of a floating port on the Danish side, various phases of work are currently underway.

Separate sections of the tunnel will be made. Each tunnel will be 217 meters long, 42 meters wide and 9 meters high. The weight of each section will be more than 73000 metric tons i.e. more than the weight of 13000 elephants. 2500 people are employed for the construction of this project. with the help of agency
