United Nations passes resolution to graduate Nepal from the category of Least Developed Country

The new political map of the country issued by the government of Nepal, on Monday, May 18, 2020, and launched on Wednesday, May 20, 2020.



Kathmandu, 25 November

The United States General Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution to graduate Nepal from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category.

The global body also decided to graduate Bangladesh and Laos from the same category.

Amrit Rai, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, says that the United Nations has also given Nepal a five-year preparatory period. This means that the country will be fully recognized as a developing country.

On the occasion, Rai reiterated Nepal’s commitment to do everything possible for smooth graduation with increased levels of support from development partners, including the United Nations system.

Nepal has been in the United Nations Least Developed Country (LDC) category since 1971.
